Abstract

Walking as a form of movement (transportation) is the most important pattern of all citizens traveling. Almost all travels commence and end up with walking, so that the assessment of pedestrian safety and comfort is a main challenge of urban planning at present century. The most important purpose of this research is analyzing of urban public spaces performance with walking-oriented goals toward building a more walkable and livable city. Therefore, this research has tried to evaluate the function of public spaces of the central portion of Uremia Metropolitan from safety and convenience viewpoint in connection with walking-oriented objectives. Research method was case study method based on documental, librarian and field studies (check List and Photography). To analyze the data, statistical software and Geographic Information System (GIS) was used. The results showed that although the central portion of Uremia metropolitan has highest traffic and population crowd, the safety and convenience indicators have not been desirable, and this is against walkability indicators. Finally some recommendations and suggestions have been presented toward a walkable city.
