Assessing the Women’s Participatory in Public Spaces Safety of Saqeez city using Participatory Urban Appraisal Model

Abstract

Considering the high volume of clients particularly women in urban areas and the strong demand for use of these places by citizens, the make of safety and comfort of these spaces is one of the main concerns of policy makers and urban planners. In order to, the aim of current paper is the assessment of women’s participatory in public spaces safety of Saqqez city by Participatory Urban Appraisal model. Applied methodology is based on library studies, women's PUA meetings, and questionnaire and field studies. Statistical society of research consist of women living, working and traveling in Saqqez urban spaces with point on public spaces of south and north Imam Khomeini avenue, Republic street and Quds avenue in Saqqez city that as random clusters were selected 200 of them as the sample size (N= 50 for each groups of 17 -34, 34- 51, 51- 65 and over of 65 years old). In continue were presented the participatory model of PUA during the five stages as A) provide preparations, b) meetings to discuss, c) provides administrative guidelines, D) field and undergraduate studies and E) is presented of needed strategies according to three criteria’s of access, Land uses, optimal spaces design for women’s and urban furniture by SWOT model. Results showed that in terms of female-centric land uses, the Quds street had far more inappropriate in providing of physical and psychological comfort of women’s with (96%) rather north Imam Khomeini street (62%), south Imam Khomeini street (45%) and Republic street with (42%). Also the results showed that city street furniture index in Republic Street with providing more favorable conditions of women's satisfaction (41%) have more favorable situation than Quds Avenue (29%), south Imam Khomeini Street (18%) and north Imam Khomeini Street with 12%.  Also, other indicator’s had similar situation. Finally, were presented the needed strategies to ease the traffic and urban transportation (as: taxi and bus stations).
