[English]

In recent decades, community-oriented city branding has emerged as an innovative strategy in urban policy and management. Adopting an anthropological and interpretive perspective, this study explores how the urban brand is perceived, reinterpreted, and experienced by the local community in the city of Babolsar, Iran. The research employs ethnographic methods, including field observation and 25 semi-structured interviews with residents. Data analysis through thematic analysis revealed that residents’ experiences of the city brand are shaped around four key themes: urban memory and identity, locality, everyday life and representation, and cultural tensions and contradictions. The findings indicate that in small cities, the sustainability of the urban brand depends on its transformation into a lived, social, and participatory phenomenon—one in which the local community actively contributes to meaning-making and brand policy. Accordingly, this study highlights the need to shift from a “commodity-oriented branding” model toward a more cultural and community-based approach in urban planning and management.
